Are Protein Bars Actually Healthy? A Founder’s Take

I’ve eaten more protein bars than most people and for years, I was consistently disappointed. They were either too sweet, too processed, too chalky, or left me feeling a bit off. And through our market research, I discovered I wasn’t alone. So many people told us the same thing: “they taste artificial,” “they’re full of ingredients I don’t recognise,” “they don’t sit well,” or simply, “I haven’t found one I actually like.”

So, are protein bars actually healthy?
They can be, but only if you know what you’re looking for.

1. Check the ingredients list (not the front of the package)

The biggest trap in the category is flavour names that don’t reflect reality. It’s shockingly common to see a bar labelled Pineapple with zero pineapple inside. Or Blueberry, but the only “blueberry” comes from colouring. Many bars lean on wellness buzzwords while hiding artificial sweeteners, gums, emulsifiers, and ultra-processed fillers in the fine print.

Why bēgood. does better:
If we say “Strawberry” or “Cacao Mānuka,” you’ll actually find those ingredients inside. No refined sugars, no artificial sweeteners, no sugar alcohols and no pretending.

2. Look at the protein source

Most bars rely on heavily processed protein powders or “proprietary blends” that can be gritty, chalky, or tough on digestion.

Why bēgood. does better:
We don’t use protein powders. Our 10g of plant protein comes from pea protein crisps and NZ-grown quinoa, giving each bar a natural, satisfying texture without the heaviness.

3. Notice the texture

An oddly chewy, shiny, or rubbery texture is usually a giveaway that binders and stabilisers are working hard behind the scenes.

Why bēgood. does better:
Our bars are naturally chewy-crisp, thanks to nuts, seeds, and plant protein crisps - no plastic-chew, no chalk, no weirdness.

So… are protein bars healthy?

When they’re thoughtfully made, yes.
When they rely on shortcuts, sweeteners, and clever marketing, not really.
