We Won Supreme Winner at the 2026 NZ Artisan Awards - Less Than One Year In

A note from our founder on building New Zealand's newest artisan protein snack brand, the quiet grind behind the gold, and what being named Supreme Winner really means.

If you'd told us a year ago that bēgood. would be named Supreme Winner at the 2026 NZ Artisan Awards before our first birthday, we would have laughed politely and gone back to hand-packing bars at the kitchen bench.

But here we are.

In October 2026 - just eleven months after launching - bēgood. Nutrition was recognised as the top artisan food brand in New Zealand, with every one of our four flavours also taking home a Gold Medal.

We're still processing it. And we wanted to say thank you properly - and share the honest story behind it.

Not a protein bar. A protein snack.

When we started bēgood., we weren't trying to build another protein bar.

New Zealand has plenty of those. Dense. Chalky. Full of ingredients you need a chemistry degree to pronounce. Protein bars that feel like a punishment to eat.

We wanted something different. A protein snack. The kind of thing you'd actually look forward to pulling out of your bag. Clean enough to feel good about. Interesting enough to crave.

That's where our signature chewy-crisp texture came from — the thing nutritionists, trainers, and even sceptical teenagers keep telling us they can't find anywhere else. Hand-crafted puffs of plant protein and quinoa, held together with real nut butters, New Zealand Mānuka honey, and nothing else that doesn't belong.

Four flavours. Four Gold Medals. One Supreme Winner. All of them made in Aotearoa, in small batches, by hand.

The highs we didn't expect

We launched with four flavours and a lot of belief.

Within our first year:

  • We hand-packed over 50,000 bars in small batches
  • We attended our first Auckland Food Show, after winning a booth only 10 days before the event
  • We landed on the shelves of New World, Four Square, Farro, Ballantynes and more.
  • We were featured in The Post
  • We built a quiet, loyal community of people who said "finally, a bar that doesn't feel like a chore"
  • We produced and exported our first overseas pallet
  • And then, in October 2026, judges across the New Zealand food industry chose bēgood. Nutrition as the single best artisan brand of the year

Every one of these felt like a pinch-me moment.

The lows we don't talk about enough

Building a brand from scratch - in a crowded protein snack category, with no shortcuts and no outside funding - isn't glamorous.

There were weeks we weren't sure if the next retailer would say yes. There were production runs that didn't go to plan. There were long nights hand-sealing packaging, trying to work out how a brand-new NZ-made snack could possibly stand out next to the big imported players.

There were moments of real doubt - the kind founders don't post about on LinkedIn.

We kept going because we believed what we were making mattered. Honest ingredients. Honest nutrition. Something our own kids could eat. Something that respected both the body it fuels and the person eating it.

Finding our path (and the people who helped)

A brand doesn't win Supreme Winner alone.

We'd be writing a very different story without the food technology experts who saw what we were trying to do when it was still half-formed in our home kitchen - and spent months turning it into a bar that could actually sit on a shelf.

We'd be invisible without the packaging and branding specialist who iterated with us round after round until a brand-new NZ brand had the presence of one that had been there for a decade.

We'd be nowhere without our retail partners who gave us a chance before we'd proved anything. Or without the customers who tried bēgood. on a whim and came back for more.

That's the thing nobody tells you about building an artisan brand in New Zealand: your network becomes your net worth. The people who see your vision early carry you further than you can carry yourself.

What Supreme Winner actually means

The Inspire+ NZ Artisan Awards aren't a popularity contest. Products are judged on flavour, texture, ingredient quality, packaging, shelf presence, and overall eating experience by a panel of independent industry experts - the kind of people who can taste the difference between real cacao and a stabiliser pretending to be chocolate.

To be named Supreme Winner is to be recognised as the top-performing artisan brand across every category entered. In 2026, that was us.

For a one-year-old brand making a premium NZ protein snack by hand in small batches, we don't take that lightly.

It's the kind of credential that quietly answers the question we hear most often: "what makes you different from a normal protein bar?"

Independent judges just told us.

The payoff - and what comes next

Winning Supreme Winner isn’t the finish line. It’s a signal that we built the foundation right.

This next year, bēgood. Nutrition is growing. Properly. We’re scaling in a way that keeps everything that got us here - the hand-crafted detail, the honest ingredients, the small-batch care - while reaching more hands, more pantries, more countries.

There’s new product on the way. There are markets beyond Aotearoa we have our sights on. There’s a bigger plan quietly taking shape behind the scenes.

We won’t give it all away yet.

But we’re exactly one year in. And honestly? We’re just getting started.
